Large Flag Mission
In 1989 a small bunch of vets decided their small town of Sidney, NE should have a memorial park to honor the brave local men and women who served and were serving in the military. A local businessman, Bob Van Vleet, volunteered to be in charge of the building of this memorial, including finding the state's largest flag pole topping out at 141 feet. It would be the highest flagpole in Nebraska. 16 yards of concrete were poured and the 4-1/2 ton flagpole was anchored in place. On July 4th in 1989 a large crowd was at the Memorial Park dedication and the raising of a 30 x 60 foot American Flag and there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. Soon afterward problems arose with the flag. It was being tattered by the high winds of this plains state. After a number of repairs by a talented seamstress, Diane Larson, it was felt there should be a more durable material for the stripes. She researched fabrics and found a new material for the memorial committee to consider. It was similar to a football jersey, an open mesh that allows air to pass through it and not against it. The result? The knit doesn't tatter and fray like traditional nylon used for ordinary flags made by other flag companies. Thus, a flag company was born and Diane became the plant manager. The flag material was test for three years on the windy plains of Nebraska. The flags tested were showing results of lasting up to 50% longer than ordinary flags in comparable conditions.
